Is President Paul Kagame dead? Everything You Need to Know About the Rumors

Is President Paul Kagame dead
For the fourth time in a decade, the question resurfaces: Is President Paul Kagame dead?

His absence from the public eye—now over ten days—has reignited a firestorm of speculation across East Africa. The last public sign of life came on June 6, 2025, when Kagame posted Eid al-Adha greetings on X. Just before that, he wrapped up a state visit to Algeria. Since then—complete silence.

Rwanda’s government has issued no statements. No appearances, no denials, not even a staged photo. In a region where leadership is defined by visibility, such a disappearance is far from ordinary. And unlike South Sudan’s quick dismissals of Salva Kiir death hoaxes, Rwanda’s silence has left the door wide open to rumors.

This isn’t the first time Kagame has vanished. In 2014, a false Facebook post about his death triggered chaos. Rwandan exiles and Congolese critics even held mock funerals. Kagame later reappeared, joking about the ordeal. But this time, the humor is missing—and so is the president.

Critics have seized the moment. David Himbara, Kagame’s former top advisor now in exile, claims Rwanda is being run from the shadows. He accuses First Lady Jeanette Kagame of holding real power, while Prime Minister Ngirente is reduced to a figurehead. Himbara speculates that Donald Kaberuka, former finance minister and ex-AfDB president, could be the regime’s choice to stabilize power if Kagame is truly gone.

From satire to conspiracy, the narratives are growing. Exiled activist Simon Pierre Gahamanyi claims Kagame died long ago and was replaced by a body double. In his telling, Rwanda’s elite is paralyzed by mistrust, ruling collectively without officially replacing the presidency. He even alleges Kagame’s daughter, Ange, was sidelined after internal feuds crushed her rumored political ambitions.

Meanwhile, in Congo, online mockeries and digital eulogies abound—less about truth than vengeance for Rwanda’s alleged involvement in regional conflicts. Others, like Congolese analyst Roger Rachidi, suggest the rumors are a distraction orchestrated by the regime itself—to deflect diplomatic pressure and buy time.

So, is Paul Kagame dead? As of now, there’s no proof. No confirmation, no denial. But in Rwanda, where Kagame’s presence is synonymous with the state, his silence speaks volumes. Until he reappears, Season 4 continues—equal parts mystery, power play, and political theatre.
