Anchor Emily Matson's Death Ruled Suicide After Train Accident

The community of Erie, Pennsylvania, is mourning the loss of Emily Matson, a beloved anchor of “Erie News Now,” whose death has been ruled a suicide. Matson, aged 42, was tragically struck by a train in the early hours of Monday, December 11, in Fairview Township, near where she lived.

Having been a familiar and trusted face on “Erie News Now” for nearly two decades, Matson was known for her passion and dedication to delivering news to the Erie community and Northwest Pennsylvania. Her last appearance on air was on Friday, December 8, before the station announced her untimely passing.

Scott MacDowell, News Director at the network, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Matson, remembering her as a “shining light in our newsroom.” Matson began her career at WICU-TV, the NBC affiliate that hosts “Erie News Now,” as a morning show producer in the early 2000s, eventually transitioning to an on-camera role.

Former colleague and “Erie News Now” personality Paul Wagner, who worked with Matson until his retirement in 2020, fondly recalled her as a “very positive person” who consistently encouraged newcomers in the field.

A funeral mass for Emily Matson is scheduled for Saturday morning, December 16, at St. Jude R.C. Church in Erie. Her passing is not only a significant loss to the news community but also to the many viewers who welcomed her into their homes through her work.
