Thanking the people of Meghalaya for voting for the National People’s Party (NPP), Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said the party was still short of a few seats for majority and will wait for the final results before deciding on the way forward. “I thank the people of our state for having voted for our party. We are grateful to them. We are still short of the numbers and are waiting for the final results, after which we will decide on the way forward,” the CM said.
As per exit polls by various news channels, the northeastern state is heading for a hung Assembly with no party crossing the halfway mark in the 60-member house. The ruling National People’s Party (NPP), as per the aggregate of four exit polls, may end up with 20 seats. The BJP, an NPP ally in power but which fought the elections separately, may increase its tally from 2 to 6.

Hekani Jakhalu becomes first woman MLA in Nagaland
Hekani Jakhalu becomes the first woman MLA in Nagaland after winning with a margin of 1536 votes representing Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party in Dimapur-III constituency. She is one of the four women candidates who are contesting the Nagaland Assembly election this year.
The state has had 13 state assemblies but not one woman has been elected to this position so far. On Thursday afternoon as counting is underway in the state, Jakhalu was the sixth person to be officially declared winner in Nagaland by the Election Commission of India. Of 31,874 votes counted in the constituency, she received 45.16% of the votes, just ahead of the LJP (RV)’s Azheto Zhimomi who received 40.34% votes.

The NPP has won five seats and was leading in 21 other constituencies as counting of votes polled in the February 27 polls was underway. “I thank the people of our state for having voted for our party. We are grateful to them. We are still short of the numbers and are waiting for the final results, after which we will decide on the way forward,” the CM, who was leading by 2,830 votes in South Tura seat, said.
UDP candidates won in two seats, while its nominees were leading in eight other constituencies. Sangma had held a meeting with his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati after exit polls predicted a hung assembly in Meghalaya.
The BJP was leading in three seats, while the Trinamool Congress and the Congress won one constituency each, and were ahead in four other constituencies each. (PTI)

As the counting of votes progresses in the three northeastern states, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said: “The simple reason behind the manner in which BJP is winning in the northeast and garnering people’s support, is that the work done by PM Modi is reaching the public. The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya won two seats, and was leading in 21 other constituencies, the Election Commission said on Thursday as the counting of votes for the assembly elections was underway. The UDP was ahead in nine constituencies, while the BJP and the Trinamool Congress were ahead in five seats each, and the Congress and the Voice of the People Party (VPP) were leading in four seats each.
The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the People’s Democratic Front were ahead in two constituencies each. Three Independent candidates were also leading, as per the latest trends available for 57 out of 59 constituencies. NPP candidates Coming One Ymbon and Sniawbhalang Dhar won from Raliang and Nartiang seats respectively by margins of 5,337 and 2,123 votes.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was leading in the South Tura seat by a margin of 508 votes, while his deputy Prestone Tynsong was leading in Pynursla seat by over 4,288 votes. State Congress president Vincent H Pala was trailing behind NPP’s Santa Mary Shylla by 2,019 votes in the Sutnga Saipung seat.
Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma of the TMC was leading from the Songsak seat by a mere 77 votes over NPP’s ND Shira. Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh was leading by 100 votes over Batskhem Ryntathiang of the Congress in Mairang constituency. BJP’s Sanbor Shullai was leading by 6,490 votes over VPP’s Danny Langstieh in South Shillong seat.
The CM’s brother James P K Sangma, and other cabinet ministers Dasakhiat Lamare (NPP), Hamlet Dohling (NPP), Lahkmen Rymbui (UDP), Brolsing Nongsiej (UDP) and Renikton Tongkhar (UDP) were trailing in their respective constituencies. (PTI)

Nowhere in the picture after the 2018 elections, the party with zero seats had overnight emerged as the principal Opposition after 12 MLAs, led by Sangma, of the Congress changed sides to it. A close fight in East Shillong between Congress’ first-timer and NPP’s heavyweight
A very close fight is panning out in Meghalaya’s key urban constituency East Shillong. Former leader of the Congress legislator party, a three-time MLA and heavyweight, Amapareen Lyngdoh, who is now contesting from the NPP, is leading but only by three votes. Giving her a tough fight is Congress’ Manuel Badwar, a former marketing consultant and IIM-Calcutta graduate. Badwar is among the many first-timers the Congress has fielded this election, after being badly hit by a series of defections. As per the figures shared by the Election Commission of India at 12.05 pm, the ruling NPP is leading in 23 seats with a voting percentage of 31.5.

An interesting trend has emerged in Meghalaya with the newly-formed Voice of the People Party (VPP) leading in four seats, including Mawlai, one of the largest constituencies in Meghalaya.

BJP to retain foothold in Northeastern region?
The BJP seems to be retaining the foothold in the Northeastern region which it has gained since Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the party to power at the centre in 2014. The early trends show that the party is ahead of the combined Opposition in Tripura, its alliance leading in Nagaland and gaining more seats in Meghalaya, a state where the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) is looking to remain in power.
With the results going in the expected way, party leaders claim that it is a verdict on the development agenda pursued by PM Modi and the BJP. If the final results are on the same lines, the party can reassure its strategy to cut through the accusation of anti-minority and anti-tribal with the development and good governance narrative. Conrad Sangma’s NPP ahead in very early leads: NDTV
20 minutes after the commencement of the counting of votes in Meghalaya, NDTV reported that Conrad Sangma’s NPP is ahead in Meghalaya in very early leads. “Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party is leading in 12 seats while the Trinamool Congress is ahead in 6 seats. The BJP, which has fought on all 60 seats, is leading in 5 seats,” NDTV reported.
Counting of votes underway amid 3-tier security
The counting of votes of the Meghalaya Assembly elections has begun across 13 counting centres across the state on Thursday. According to the Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor, three-tier security arrangements have been made with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) guarding the innermost layer and State Armed police will keep vigil over the second and third layers.
“We have 13 counting centres across the state, 12 in all district headquarters, one in Sohra Sub Division. 22 CAPF companies have been retained for purposes of ensuring 24×7 safeguard protocols in respect of the strong rooms containing the polled Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) of 3,419 polling stations in the 59 poll-going Assembly Constituencies and will stay on till April 4 for any post-poll contingencies/exigencies,” Kharkongor said.
The counting centres are all placed under CCTV and webcast surveillance. There will be a total of 383 rounds of counting, with a maximum of nine rounds for the biggest assembly constituency Mawlai in East Khasi Hills District and four rounds for smaller ACs like Dalu in West Garo Hills District, informed the CEO. Counting of votes begins in Meghalaya
Counting of votes began in Meghalaya at 8 am on Thursday amid tight security, a senior election official said. Votes polled in 59 of the 60 assembly constituencies of the state on February 27 are being counted at 13 centres across the state. Polling in Sohiong seat was adjourned due to the death of a candidate.
Twenty-two companies of central paramilitary forces have been deployed to guard the counting centres, Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor told PTI. Exit polls have predicted a hung assembly in Meghalaya, as ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is believed to have been holding parleys with the BJP for a possible post-poll alliance.
The CEO said that 14 counting halls have been arranged in Shillong and 11 in Tura. Over 500 observers have been deployed across the state. The Election Commission has banned victory processions till 4 pm on March 4. (PTI)

Stakes high for BJP ahead of counting of votes in 3 northeastern states
Stakes are high for the BJP ahead of the counting of votes on Thursday for three state assembly polls as results will signal if it has deepened its roots in Tripura, a Left bastion captured by the party in 2018, and made further inroads in Meghalaya and Nagaland, or the opposition has managed to dent its influence.
While regional parties remain bigger players in both Meghalaya and Nagaland, the BJP ran a determined campaign with its bigwigs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, in the states to expand its footprints.
For the first time, the BJP has fought on all 60 seats in Meghalaya and constantly targeted National People’s Party leader and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for running the “most corrupt” state government in the country.
The BJP was a partner in the state government but broke ties ahead of the polls. The party hopes to boost its strength from two in the assembly to emerge as a more powerful player if the verdict throws up a hung assembly like the last time.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP’s pointsman for the northeast region, met Sangma after the polls in an indication that the two parties can do business together again.
An interesting sideshow to these election is the strong push by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress to make an impact in the polls to project itself as a stronger challenger to the BJP than the Congress, more so as the countdown to the next Lok Sabha polls in 2024 begins.
The Congress has also run an intensive campaign, with Rahul Gandhi holding a rally in Meghalaya, in its bid to claw back its lost influence in the states it once dominated. (PTI)

New players in Northeast poll arena show an urge to change

‘We will get majority in Meghalaya, Chief Minister has worked for people’: NPP leader
A day ahead of counting for Meghalaya assembly polls, National People’s Party (NPP) leader JD Sangma has exuded confidence of the party getting a comfortable majority in the state. JD Sangma, NPP chief of West Garo Hills district, said the party will over 30 seats in the 60-member assembly and emerge victorious.
“We have worked very hard. Our Chief Minister also worked very hard not only for this election campaign but he worked for the people to boost development, specially in Garo Hills region. We are very confident,” he said. “We are hopeful that our party will win at least 15 seats in Khasi and Jaintia Hills region. We are expecting it will be around 31-32 seats in the state. We are preparing for the celebrations,” he added.
NPP workers also expressed confidence of victory. Meghalaya saw voting for assmebly polls on February 27. Agatchi W. Momin, a NPP worker from the South Tura constituency, said that all party workers are eagerly waiting for tomorrow’s result. NPP leader and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is contesting from South Tura constituency.
Both BJP and NPP contested the assembly polls separately though they partnered in the ruling alliance. In an interesting development, Conrad Sangma met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Tuesday night. The meeting lasted for half an hour. Exit polls have predicted a hung verdict in Meghalaya.

Results for the 59 seats in the Meghalaya Assembly will be declared on Thursday after the counting of votes which is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. After a high voltage campaign in Meghalaya, voting was held on February 27 for 59 seats of the Meghalaya Assembly and 85.17 per cent of voters cast their vote to decide the fate of 369 candidates.
The administration has made all arrangements for smooth counting in Meghalaya and as per the Election Commission of India’s order, the administration will be vigilant and implement the guideline for the counting process.
While talking to ANI, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya Sibhi Chakrawarthy Sadhu said, “In Shillong polo ground counting of 14 seats will take place. Ballot counting will begin at 8 am while the EVM counting will begin at 8:30 am.” “We have made all elaborate arrangements regarding security protocol and who will be allowed inside the counting hall. Counting staff and Micro observers have been deployed at each table also. We also interacted with political parties to follow protocol. No unauthorized person will be allowed to enter in Counting hall,” the DC added. (ANI)
Here is how the National People’s Party is positioned
To match the growing ambitions of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the ruling party needs to establish that it can win an election on its own. Last time, the party had got 20.60 per cent of the votes and won 19 seats in the 60-member Assembly, finishing behind the Congress’s 28.65 per cent votes and 21 seats. It was the support of the BJP and other smaller allies that saw Conrad into his first term in power.
The alliance between the NPP and BJP in power was uneasy at best, marked by frequent squabbling, with the two contesting separately in the recent elections. Besides, Conrad, who is looking to expand the NPP beyond Meghalaya and has some stake in Nagaland too, which also voted on February 27, needs a solo win to shed the tag of being a party supported — and dictated, as per its rivals — by the BJP.
A win would also help Conrad, 45, grow out of his father P A Sangma’s shadow. The former Lok Sabha Speaker and once a familiar national figure, the late P A Sangma continues to be a popular figure in the state. Conrad took over the party in 2016, after P A Sangma’s death that year, and this time four of the family are in the race on NPP ticket. Meghalaya’s final voter turnout 85.25%
Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor on Tuesday said that 85.25 per cent of the state’s 21.6 lakh voters exercised their franchise during the assembly election held on the previous day. The CEO’s office on Monday said that over 75 per cent polling was recorded till 5 pm though voting continued for several more hours after it was supposed to conclude at 4 pm.
“The turnout was 85.25 per cent. Polling was held in a free and fair manner and no untoward incident has been reported,” Kharkongor told PTI. Mowkaiaw constituency in West Jaintia Hills district border Assam’s West Karbi Anglong registered the highest voter turnout of 92.73 per cent, he said. Altogether 12 constituencies recorded over 90 per cent voting. Counting will be held on March 2 at 13 centres across the state.
Battleground Meghalaya boils down to Sangma vs Sangma war as BJP waits in the wings
In Meghalaya’s Tikrikilla, a dusty plain town bordering Assam, it is a crowded fray for the February 27 Assembly polls, just like the rest of the state, where new parties spring up ahead of every major election. Tikrikilla has just about 30,000 voters, but as many as six candidates are in contention in the constituency.
But Nogendra Rabha, the headmaster of Tikrikilla’s only high school, has not even bothered to find out the names of all the candidates, even though he has interest in politics. And the battlelines between the two sides have been drawn most sharply in the state’s Garo Hills — the home turf of both the Sangmas (the two are not related). “They are the role models for Garo society, as a voter you have to choose whose side you are on,” adds Rabha.
