Kenya has 90 political parties duly registered by the Registrar of Political Parties. However, you must be registered if you wish to belong to any of these parties. However, political party membership requirements may vary from one party to the other.

How to register as a political party member in Kenya

The registration exercise is simple and can be done in two ways. First, you can access the specified Party Membership Verification Forms at party offices and fill them out. Alternatively, you can do it online through the eCitizen platform.

The exercise of political party registration online is straightforward. Here is how you can register as a political party member on eCitizen.

Sign in/Log into your account. First-time users will be required to create an account.
Click on the Office of the Register of Political Parties portal.
You will be presented with three options (Checking party membership, Registration to a party, or Resignation from a party). Select “Registration to a party”.
Fill in details of the party and your voter registration details.
Verify the information given and press okay.

How to check your political membership status

There are two ways you verify your party membership status. You can do it either through the website or SMS shortcode way.

Through new website

Visit the Office of Registrar of Political Parties website.
Click on Check your membership status in the right-hand corner.

If you’re a registered voter, input the national identification or passport number with which you registered.

Through SMS shortcode

The steps here are equally easy.

Dial *509#.
Enter your identification number. You will then be given two options (Checking party membership and Deregistration from or Resignation to a party).
Select Checking party membership.
