TAARAB
Taarab is a historic Swahili music genre deeply rooted in the culture of Zanzibar, Tanzania, Kenya, and the wider East African coast. Derived from the Arabic word tarab, meaning musical joy or ecstasy, Taarab blends African, Arabic, Indian, and Western influences through poetic lyrics, rich melodies, and expressive storytelling. The genre was popularized in Zanzibar during the late 19th century and later transformed by legendary artists such as Siti binti Saad, Bi Kidude, Mzee Yusuph, Khadija Kopa, and Isha Mashauzi. From classical orchestral Taarab to modern “Rusha Roho” styles filled with mipasho, Taarab remains a powerful sound for weddings, social commentary, worship, love, and Swahili cultural identity.
