Originally released in 2015, “Penye Neema” is part of the album Mpenzi Chocolate. The song is associated with Mzee Yusuph, the legendary “King of Modern Taarab,” who helped shape Jahazi Modern Taarab’s distinctive blend of traditional Taarab emotion and modern arrangements.
Jahazi Modern Taarab is known for songs that combine Swahili poetry, expressive vocals, and real-life social commentary. Their music often speaks about love, rivalry, patience, envy, and the lessons people experience in daily life.
The title “Penye Neema” means “Where there is grace.” The song explains that blessings and success can attract jealousy, gossip, and conflict, but what comes from God cannot be taken away by human malice. Its message encourages resilience, confidence, and faith in the face of envy.
