MZEE YUSUPH
Mzee Yusuph, born Mzee Yusuph Mwinyi, is a legendary Tanzanian singer, songwriter, composer, and Taarab icon from Zanzibar. Widely known as the “King of Modern Taarab,” he is the founder and long-time leader of Jahazi Modern Taarab, a group that helped popularize a faster, danceable, keyboard-driven style of Taarab music across East Africa. Mzee Yusuph is known for classic songs such as “Kiboko Yangu,” “Sina Muda Huo,” “Hakuna Mkamilifu,” “Nilijua Mtasema,” and “Mahaba Niue.” With multiple awards and decades of influence, he remains one of the most important figures in Tanzanian Taarab music.
