Monique Séka, born November 22, 1965 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, is widely celebrated as the Queen of Afro-Zouk. She grew up in a musical lineage (her father Okoi Séka Athanase was a singer), and her artistry melds Caribbean Zouk with Ivorian rhythms to create a fusion beloved across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Indian Ocean.

Missounwa, released in 1989, is one of her landmark albums. The title track became a continental hit, not just for its hypnotic rhythm and melody but also for the polished production by Cape Verde’s Manu Lima.
