Blick Bassy’s “Mpodol” is a profound and deeply significant song from his powerful 2019 album, “1958.” The entire album is a dedication to Ruben Um Nyobé, an anti-colonial leader from Cameroon who was tragically assassinated by French forces in 1958.

“Mpodol” is a title of great reverence, meaning “one who speaks the truth” or “spokesperson for his people” in Bassa, Bassy’s ancestral language. It was a title bestowed upon Um Nyobé, and Bassy uses this song to directly honor him and lament his often-forgotten legacy.
