Nigerian superstar Ayra Starr has been named Spotify’s global artist for May 2024, joining fellow Nigerian Tiwa Savage as the only other African artist to receive both the Spotify EQUAL Africa and global artist honors.

Ayra Starr, known for her chart-topping hits such as “Rush,” “Sability,” and “Rhythm & Blues,” takes center stage in Spotify’s EQUAL Africa and EQUAL Global program for May 2024. This recognition highlights her exceptional talent and contributions to the music industry, further solidifying her status as a leading Afrobeats artist.
Spotify’s EQUAL program, which hosted 15 activations and facilitated over 14.8 million artist discoveries from EQUAL playlists in 2023, has proven to be a significant platform for promoting female artists. EQUAL artists received 11,800 editorial playlist ads, showcasing the program’s impact and reach.
Ayra Starr’s February release, “Commas,” has already garnered over 35 million streams on Spotify. Speaking on her selection as Spotify’s EQUAL artist, she expressed gratitude and emphasized the importance of representing women in Afrobeats and African music.

“I am grateful to become a Spotify EQUAL Ambassador. It means so much to me to be able to represent women in Afrobeats and African women in general. There are so many women in music right now, and the EQUAL program is doing a great job in highlighting their hard work,” she said.
The Grammy-nominated singer is also gearing up for the release of her second album, “The Year I Turned 21,” which is expected to drop in May 2024.
