In a recent turn of events, Tanzanian musicians Whozu, Mbosso, and Billnass have been granted a reprieve following the successful appeal against their music ban. The National Arts Council of Tanzania, Baraza La Sanaa La Taifa (BASATA), had initially imposed a three-month prohibition on the trio from engaging in any artistic activities, effective from November 4, 2023.

The ban stemmed from public outcry over the content of the ‘Ameyatimba‘ remix music video, featuring Whozu, Mbosso, and Billnass. The video was criticized for allegedly promoting and glorifying acts of rape and sodomy, leading to a swift reaction from BASATA.

However, following an appeal from the artists, the decision has been reversed. This development was announced in a session led by the Minister of Culture, Arts, and Sports, Dr. Damas Ndumbaro, and his Deputy Minister, Hamis Mwinjuma (also known as Mwana FA), at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
As part of the agreement for lifting the ban, the artists are required to pay fines and adhere to Tanzanian ethics in their artistic work. Whozu faces a fine of Tsh5 million, and Tsh1 million, and Mbosso is to pay Tsh3 million. Additionally, Whozu has been given six hours to remove the ‘Ameyatimba’ remix from all digital platforms.
This decision by BASATA underscores the council’s commitment to ensuring that the music produced in Tanzania aligns with the country’s cultural norms and values.
It’s noteworthy that this isn’t the first instance where Tanzanian artists have faced sanctions from BASATA. Previously, artists like Nay wa Mitego and Diamond Platnumz have also been banned and fined for content deemed inappropriate or culturally insensitive.
