Early Life And Educational Background
Cheri was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in September 1962 and grew up in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. Interestingly, Upper Darby is also the hometown of her SNL cast mate, Tina Fey.
She attended Archbishop Prendergast High School, where she shared her school years with her siblings Denise, Brian, and Tommy Junior. At the age of 25, Cheri relocated to Los Angeles, where she assumed the role of a promotions coordinator at A&M Records.
Cheri Oteri’s Career
Upon her arrival in Los Angeles at the age of 25, Oteri embarked on a four-year journey at A&M Records. Subsequently, she became a part of the esteemed comedy ensemble known as The Groundlings. It was in 1995 when producers of Saturday Night Live (SNL) attended one of The Groundlings’ performances, initially aiming to audition fellow troupe member Chris Kattan.
During one of Kattan’s costume changes, Oteri seized the moment and delivered a captivating monologue, capturing the attention of SNL producers. This impromptu performance earned her an invitation to audition for SNL, alongside Kattan and another Groundling, Will Ferrell.
In September 1995, she officially joined SNL as a performer, becoming part of an almost entirely new cast brought in to revitalize the show following its troubled 1994–1995 season.
