Ntombi Marhumbini, born Mavis Ntombi Ngwenya, was a legendary South African musician and entrepreneur celebrated as the “Queen of Shangaan Disco.” Hailing from Msogwaba village in Mpumalanga, she became a major voice in Shangaan disco by blending traditional rhythms with energetic electronic dance sounds. Ntombi rose to fame with her 1995 breakout album Jelani Jelani and became widely loved across Southern and East Africa, especially through songs such as “Jelani Jelani,” “Bovoza,” “Nuna Wa Mina,” “Mbilu ya Vava,” and “Xikhalabyana.” Her music remains influential in old-school African dance music and continues to inspire fans after her passing in 2017.
