South African jazz legend and anti-apartheid icon Hugh Masekela released a timeless Afro-jazz composition titled “Mbombela.”

The song stands out as one of the memorable tracks from his celebrated studio album Sixty, blending rich African rhythms with soulful jazz influences. “Mbombela” was officially released on May 10, 1999, and later received an international digital release on June 13, 2000 through Sony Music Entertainment Africa. The song appears on Masekela’s milestone album Sixty, a project recorded to commemorate his 60th birthday. The track features notable vocal contributions from legendary singer Sibongile Khumalo and was written by Welcome Lulama “Weldon” Duru, with arrangements handled by D. Laka. The recording also brought together respected South African jazz musicians including John Selolwane on guitar, Fana Zulu on bass, Vusi Khumalo on drums, Arthur Tshabalala on piano, and Godfrey Mgcina on percussion.
