Bongo Flava was developed in the 1990s, mainly as a derivative of American hip hop and traditional Tanzanian styles such as taarab and dance, with additional influences from reggae, R&B, afro beats, a combination that forms a unique style of music.

In addition, Bongo Flava has managed to create waves across Africa and the world in general with lead artists like Diamond Platnumz and Rayavanny becoming the first African to top Billboard charts in Mexico Mexico through a collaboration he did with Colombian star Maluma towards the end of 2021.
